carved stones

Carved stones remain the most tangible and distinctive legacy of the Picts. The best examples are carved with great beauty and skill. Some include complex decorative schemes. Some feature Christian crosses. A range of uniquely Pictish symbols appear on many stones. Some symbols are abstract motifs; others represent domestic objects. Many of the symbols are birds or animals, both real and mythical.

Several hundred carved Pictish stones have been discovered around Scotland, largely in northern and eastern regions. This section describes them in more detail.
